| The Audio Part Overview The Audio Part is a multi channel sample sequencer. Sample sequences are called Parts, where each Part can be triggered by its own midi key. Samples are "wrapped" by audio clips, so that multiple clips can share the same sample data but have different settings like corase/fine tune, vol, pan and sample start/end points. It support multi outs, but also has built in "virtual" mixer channels with volume, pan, mute and solo. Samples and audio outputs are shared by all parts in the Audio Part comp. Clips and virtual mixer channels are per part. Adding a clip To add a clip, right-click the grid and select "Add clip..." from the popup menu. What happens is that the sample is stored in ram, and a clip is created with "reference" to that sample. The clip will always be inserted beneeth the mouse cursor. . Note that this doesn't delete the sample, only the clip that is referencing the sample. Show samples Right-click the grid and select "Show samples". The sample list will show up on the right-hand side of the window. Delete sample On each sample you will see a number indicating how many clips are referencing this sample. To delete a sample, left-click to select it, then right-click on the sample list and select "Delete" from the popup menu. If a sample has clips assigned to it, they will also be deleted. Add mixer channel Each Part can have any number of mixer channels. To add a mixer channel, select "Add Ch" from the Edit menu. The mixer channels serves two purposes. 1) You can group clips, so that you can set volume, pan, mute and solo on multiple clips at the same time. 2) Each mixer channel has output assignent, so that clips can be sent to individual effects.
The picture above highlights the available controls on each mixer channel. Starting from top you can see the output selector (output 2), mute and solo buttons, pan (center) and finally volume (127) at the bottom. Add output Select "Add output" from the edit menu. As you add outputs, they will be available on each mixer channel. There can be up to 16 stereo outputs per Audio Part comp. Routing mixer channels Right-click the Audio Comp icon in the main window, select destination from the popup menu. The picture below shows that the second output goes to BJ Flanger
In the Audio Part window, set the output on the mixer channel to the second output as well. All audio clips on this mixer channel will now be routed to BJ Flanger.
New Part There can be any number of Parts. Click the New button to add a new part. You set the length of the part by entering the number of Beats.
Triggering Parts Parts are triggered by MIDI, so first you need to route a MIDI cable to it. MIDI-to-part triggering is automatic, C1 plays part 1, C#1 plays part 2, D1 plays part 3 etc. Delete Part First select the Part, then click the Del button. Moving clips Click and drag clips to move them around the grid. A clip can be moved to any mixer channel as well. Use the Snap setting to "quantize" the position of the clips. The Snap can also be set to Off, to turn of quantizing completely. Copying clips Works the same way as moving clips, but you need to press the ctrl-key while doing it. Copy/paste clips Select a clip, right-click and select "Copy clip" from the popup menu. Then right-click at the position in ghe grid where you want to paste a copy, and select "Paste clip" from the popup menu. A clip can be pasted into any Part as sample data are shared between Parts. Splitting clips Alt-left-click a clip to split it. When yuo split a clip, you will get 2 clips referencing the same sample. The second clip will start where the first left off. When Snap is on, splitting clips will be quantized. This makes it easier to spilt a clip per beat or 16th.
The picture shows a bass drum that has been split in two.
Well, splitting larger musical parts can be more interesting as the individual clips then can then be re-arranged, moved to different channels to apply effects or replaced by other samples. Clip sample start/end Left-click at the top of the clip view to set the position in the sample where the clip should start playing. Right-click to set the end point.
Clip properties A clip has volume, pan, coarse, fine. Select the clip in the grid you want to edit, then edit the properties in the Clip view at the bottom. Each clip has its own settings, even if they share the same sample data.
Clip volume envelope Each clip has it's own volume envelope. There are 2 pre-defined envelopes. If you click the Ramp button, you can select Fade-in or Fade-out from the Ramp menu. Well, not very exciting envelopes, but they can also be used as a nice starting-point for any envelope. You can completely remove the envelope by selecting "Delete" from the Ramp menu. The envelope points can be dragged with the mouse. Double-click to insert new envelope point, and right-click to delete envelope point.
