energyXT

Getting started

energyXT comes in two VST flavours. One that acts as an instrument with MIDI input and audio output, and one that acts like an audio effect with MIDI/audio input and audio output. They can both send MIDI events back to the host, working like a 'MIDI effect' inside a VST hosts that support this feauture. Of course, energyXT itself support this.

The VST versions of energyXT doesn't come with an installer. All you need to do is download and unzip the energyXT DLL to the VST folder used by your host. Notice the 'default.gui' included in the zip file. This is the default skin for energyXT and is requiered unless you use a 3rd party skin.

When you load energyXT into your host and open the editor window, you will see the main window with two components. The top most comp, 'Master In', is for routing MIDI/audio signals from your host to VST's and other comps loaded inside energyXT. The comp at the bottom, 'Master out', is for sending MIDI/audio signals back to the host.

Before we can started loading our favorite VST's, we need to tell energyXT where to find them. Right-click the main window and select 'Folders...' from the popup menu.

You may add as many folders as you want, and each folder can be given it's own menu text. First I will add the location to all my VST instruments and I want this folder to show up as 'Synths' on the popup menu in energyXT. 1) On the left side of the window I browse to my instrument folder, 2) then I click the 'Add >' button and 3) I finally enter the menu text at the bottom of the window.

I need to add the location to my VST effetcs too, so I repeat the 3 steps above and finally click the 'OK' button to store the changes.

When I right-click in the main window, the two new folders I just added will now show up in the popup menu.

When I want to load a VST into energyXT, I just select it from the popup menu.

The picture below shows that MIDI input from host (Master In) is routed into SUPERWAVEP8, and audio output of SUPERWAVEP8 is routed back to host (Master out)

Now why would I load a VST into energyXT instead of just into the host itself? energyXT has some cool built midi comps, like the Arpeggiator and Chords comp, and it has endless routing options. Just connect an Arp between Master In and the SUPERWAVEP8 and start playing.
